Growing up without electricity, she remembers the nights spent straining her eyes to read by the faint, smoky light of a lamp. She remembers coming home daily from her lower primary day school only to join her family in the endless search for firewood, walking for miles into forests where gathering fuel was both dangerous and illegal during the school holidays. She saw the desperation in people’s eyes as they carried smoldering sacks of charcoal on their backs, risking arrest just to cook a meal or earn a few shillings. She remembered the darkness that forced them to sleep early and wake before dawn, waiting for the sun just to read a book.
Then, there was hope—a small solar PV system her father brought home. But with no proper installation or maintenance know-how by the father, it failed, leaving them once again in the dark. That moment stayed with her. It wasn’t just about light; it was about opportunity, safety, and dignity.
Years later, she realized that her story was not unique—millions across Africa still live this reality. But she also saw the solution: renewable energy could change everything.
